You don't need an elaborate collection to start practicing gong fu tea — just a few well-chosen pieces, built up gradually.
Start With the Essentials
A gaiwan and two or three small tasting cups are genuinely all you need to begin. Simple glazed porcelain gaiwans are inexpensive, neutral in flavor, and forgiving for beginners still learning the pour and grip.
Add a Fairness Pitcher Next
A cha hai (fairness pitcher) ensures every cup poured has the same strength, since tea poured straight from a gaiwan gets progressively weaker cup to cup. It's a small addition that makes a real difference in consistency.
A Tray Solves the Mess Problem
Gong fu tea involves a lot of pouring, rinsing, and overflow by design. A simple tray with basic drainage — even an inexpensive bamboo one — saves your table and lets you pour freely without hesitation.
Tools Can Wait
The traditional “Six Gentlemen” tool set (scoop, tongs, pick, and others) is genuinely useful but not essential on day one. Add it once you're comfortable with the basics and know what you'll actually reach for.
Build slowly. The ritual matters more than the collection.
